I can't hear other participants, but they can hear me

This has been noted as a symptom of known bug in Google Chrome that was introduced in Chrome 50, and we have reported it to the Chrome team. They are working on a fix, but we don't know when a new version of Chrome with a fix will be available.

In the meantime, we have made a workaround:

  1. Click Cam/Mic in the top bar
  2. Click the “Output” dropdown
  3. Select an output source and click “Save”, if you have multiple Output sources, you may have to try several times to find one that works.

As the browsers are updated regularly we advise checking for updates as well. appear.in currently supports the two most recent versions of major browsers. For example, if your Chrome is older than version 55 you will want to update the browser.

It's also not uncommon for some third party extensions for sound capabilities to interfere with sound. To confirm this is the case, join the room in an incognito/private window (you will need to unlock your room to do so or login on the private window to enter a locked room). If the sound returns you most likely have an extension interference. Pro-tip: if you have a lot of extensions check for the one that updated around the time you started having the audio troubles to find the one that is problematic.

If none of the suggestions above work, you can switch over to use Firefox, Opera or Vivaldi, until a bug fixed is released in a new version of Chrome.
